Recognition Prior Learning (RPL) identifies and recognizes the skills and knowledge a person has acquired not only through formal training, but also on the job, at home and in the community.

Adult Learning Center promotes and supports the development and implementation of RPL.

RPL can include:

• Work experience – paid and unpaid
• Volunteer work
• School credits
• Military experience
• Travel
• Hobbies
• Independent study
• Family and life experiences

Contact the Educational Director of the adult learning centre(s) to discuss whether your informal, non-formal or formal learning matches any course descriptions and whether you would like to continue with the RPL process.

If you and the Education Director agree to proceed with RPL, the Director and the student must agree on the method(s) of assessment that is expected and when the work is to be completed. The Director may invite a teacher to discuss the assessment methods and timeline with you.

Once you have completed the course work and the assessment of the course material/exam is done, the Director and/or teacher will grade your work. If you are successful, then you will be granted credit and a grade for the course(s). If you are unsuccessful, you will not be granted credit but your grade will show up on your transcript.

Students who have taken high school courses in Manitoba might be able to have up to six (6) courses transferred towards their Mature Student High School Diploma.

Students should provide copies of these transcripts to the adult learning centre(s) so that the Education Director can evaluate whether any of the completed and passed courses, Grades 9–12, are eligible for transfer credit.

Please note that we will do our best to transfer credits, but it is not always possible to give credits.

Students who have taken high school courses in other Canadian provinces may have up to six (6) courses transferred towards their Mature Student High School Diploma.

Students should provide copies of these transcripts to the adult learning centre(s) so that the Education Director can evaluate whether any of the non-Manitoba/ out-of-province courses, Grades 9 – 12 equivalents, are eligible for transfer credit.

Students transferring to Manitoba’s school system as resident pupils should have their courses evaluated to determine whether Manitoba credit(s) can be granted.

Students who have taken high school courses outside of Manitoba, but have not graduated with a high school diploma, may have up to six (6) courses transferred towards their Mature Student High School Diploma.

If the student has graduated from a high school program outside of Canada that has a Grade 12 equivalent to a Manitoba High School Diploma, but the out-of-country Diploma is not accepted by post-secondary institutions in Manitoba, the student can upgrade by taking courses at the adult learning centre.

Normally, these students are required to take Grade 12 courses in Math, English or Science to meet the entrance requirements of colleges or universities in Manitoba.

Note: Students should find out which Grade 12 courses specifically meet the entrance requirements for the post-secondary program(s) they would like to pursue before registering for classes at an adult learning centre. There are different types of Math, English and Science courses. Please visit our Course Descriptions page for this list and its descriptions.

Yes, students who are proficient in languages other than English or French may earn up to four (4) credits through the Special Language Credit Option. See Special Language Credit Option or SVAE school staff for more information.
