General
Are classes at SVALC online or in-class?
All MITT Adult Learning Centres (ALC) are funded as in-class schools. Thus, we are not an online school.
Students who sign-up for classes at any of our ALCs will be expected to attend classes in person, unless instructed otherwise. Some examples include:
- MITT or Government of Manitoba mandates schools to work remotely
- student/family member(s) in same household experience COVID-19 like symptoms
- your class is too large for social-distancing, then you will be in-person two days per week and remote two days per week
Can I take classes at more than one MITT Adult Learning Centre in a school year?
Yes, many of our current students take courses at multiple Adult learning Centers to complete the requirements of their Mature Student High School Diploma or upgrading requirements to enter postsecondary institutions.
In order to schedule realistic timetables, students should consider their current work and/or family obligations and travel time, before signing up for multiple ALCs or courses.
What is the difference between a High School Diploma, a GED Certificate and a Mature Student High School Diploma?
- In Manitoba, to earn a High School Diploma (English), a student must successfully complete 30 compulsory and optional credits across Grades 9 to 12.
- The GED, General Education Diploma, is a test one can take to evaluate their ability and understanding of high school subject areas. It is NOT a replacement for a high school diploma. Completing and passing the GED will earn you a GED Certificate only. Normally, post-secondary institutions do not accept the GED Certificate in place of the (Mature Student) High School Diploma. https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/all/ged/
- The Mature Student High School Diploma is an alternative route to graduation available to students who meet the mature student eligibility requirements. Students seeking a Manitoba Mature Student High School Diploma need 8 credits to graduate.
- At least 4 of those credits must be at grade 12 level (40S or 41G) and must include English and Math.
- The remaining 4 credits can include any optional courses that we offer at our adult learning centre.
I have already graduated with a Grade 12 High School Diploma, can I take courses at an Adult Learning Centre just to upgrade for university entrance?
Yes, a student can upgrade at our adult learning centre by providing a copy of their transcript and/or Grade 12 High School Diploma.
Students who are upgrading, who have already achieved grade 12 graduation in Canada or another country, are encouraged to take 4 credits, including English 40S and Math 40S, to receive an upgrading completion certificate.
Pre-Registration
What are the costs of attending classes at an Adult Learning Centre?
There is a $20 registration fee per semester for attending classes at MITT Adult Learning Centres. If you sign up for both Semester 1 and Semester 2, you will pay $40 in total.
All registrations fees are non-refundable.

We do not offer any evening or summer classes at St. Vital Adult learning Center.
What supplies will I need for my classes?

Please ask your instructor if any additional supplies are needed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition Prior Learning (RPL) identifies and recognizes the skills and knowledge a person has acquired not only through formal training, but also on the job, at home and in the community.
Adult Learning Center promotes and supports the development and implementation of RPL.
RPL can include:
- Work experience – paid and unpaid
- Volunteer work
- School credits
- Military experience
- Travel
- Hobbies
- Independent study
- Family and life experiences
How do I apply for RPL? What is the process?
Contact the Educational Director of the adult learning centre(s) to discuss whether your informal, non-formal or formal learning matches any course descriptions and whether you would like to continue with the RPL process.
If you and the Education Director agree to proceed with RPL, the Director and the student must agree on the method(s) of assessment that is expected and when the work is to be completed. The Director may invite a teacher to discuss the assessment methods and timeline with you.
Once you have completed the course work and the assessment of the course material/exam is done, the Director and/or teacher will grade your work. If you are successful, then you will be granted credit and a grade for the course(s). If you are unsuccessful, you will not be granted credit but your grade will show up on your transcript
